The Magnificence - The Kindle

Thoughts on the Kindle

Let me preface by saying that I travel. I travel A LOT. I'm also an avid reader; doesn't have to be anything on the best-seller list, either! I love the old classics, but I'll read just about anything that catches my attention. Seeing how much I travel, and a laptop being too bulky to carry some places, I've been waiting a long time for someone to innovate a product that would allow me to read all my favorite books while taking up very little space. Ladies and gentlemen, I've found it. I introduce to you the Kindle...

When I plucked down the money for my very first kindle, I was a wee bit apprehensive. Upon arrival, I realized just how paper thin this thing really is. It seems very, very fragile. Being a bull-in-a-China-shop type, I was even more nervous. I was proven wrong.

Thickness!

After several, I repeat several drops, sometimes from substantial heights, I've NEVER had a problem with this device. It's quite remarkable, really. I've tapped on an LCD computer monitor before and caused more damage than this; no idea how they make this tiny, thin thing so darned durable. No screen outage, no nothing. Good as new.

The only thing I can think of that I didn't like about the Kindle was the screen size at only 6". You'd think that wouldn't be too difficult, but trying to read an entire book on a screen that small can be hard on the eyes. Don't get me wrong, this is a remarkabl
e device whose pros still far, far outweigh the cons, but then I heard about the Kindle DX!

The Kindle DX is bigger, better, stronger and a little heavier than it's previous incarnation. This is no mistake and not a bad thing by any means; it takes the original Kindle and fixes everything you thought could be possibly wrong with it. On a GIANT 9.7" screen, reading an entire book or even the newspaper is easy on the eyes and a complete breeze.

The Kindle DX holds a lot more material, as well. It may be just me, but I think the image and text is clearer, too. Very, very clear I might add. It's actually a bit sharper than the previous Kindle.

Did I mention stronger and heavier? No problems in dropping this one, either. Plus, it's quite a bit heavier and may lend itself to be more of a "lap reader", which is not a bad thing considering the enormous screen this thing comes with. Don't let that bother you, though; it's completely managable.

Conclusion:

This is a truly revolutionary piece of equipment and a must have for any reading traveler. Really remarkable stuff and an example of utter engineering genius. This was a niche that's been needing to be filled for some time now, and finally we have the PERFECT product to do it.

Let me say that I am perfectly happy with both of them, but I've found myself almost exclusively using my Kindle DX. It's more expensive, yes, but it's a nearly completely different machine considering how much bigger it is and easier to use. Not to mention the sheer number of books you can hold on this thing! Holy Moly!

Both are great buys; but my money is for the Kindle DX. Given the choice, I'd pick it any day of the week. Just my opinion!
